Match preview reasoning, format to draft: how the desk reads a Bo3, Bo5 and Bo7

play12 covers the tournaments, teams, players and patches that move competitive esports. Every horizon is dated, every claim carries a source, every correction is published.

01 / standards

How we cover
Reporting policy

Editorial standards

Every claim is sourced. Every correction is visible.

play12 is a working newsroom for competitive esports. Three rules guide every desk: we do not publish live brackets, scores or rosters unless we have a dated source, we write a correction trail when something changes, and we keep a permanent record of what we have claimed and where the claim came from.

Rule one

Source on every fact

Numbers, dates, rosters and patches are tagged with a source URL and a verification date. If we cannot source it, we mark it as awaiting verification.

Rule two

Corrections are public

When a story is updated, the original draft remains visible and the correction is appended with a date. The news desk never silently rewrites a claim.

Rule three

No invented gates

We do not fabricate live scores, fake brackets, fake roster moves or invented payout language. The play12 desk reports what is documented, and labels what is not.

02 / games

Five tracks, one atlas
FPS · MOBA · fighting · racing · BR

A vertical atlas of competitive games

Competitive play is not a single sport. The atlas maps five recurring tracks where tournaments, teams, players, patches and viewing rails move on a steady weekly cadence. Each ribbon on the right is a track; each track has its own desk rhythm but shares the same sourcing rules.

Track 01

Tactical FPS
5v5 round-based - rifle, pistol, utility

Format

Bo1 / Bo3 typical

Side selection rotates. Veto and pick ordering is part of the format itself.

Watch for

Map pool shifts

Pools rotate every patch. Read the weekly map-pool note before previews.

Editorial ask

Side-by-side utility

Trade pathing, economy and contest windows are the language of the desk.

Track 02

MOBA
5v5 objective-based - lane, jungle, draft

Format

Bo3 / Bo5

Draft is the first five picks. Read the draft story before the recap.

Watch for

Patch-driven roles

A small number change can flip a role from off-meta to staple.

Editorial ask

Vision and tempo

Objective trades and jungle pathing are the macro stories of the match.

Track 03

Fighting games
1v1 duel - neutral, oki, mix-ups

Format

First-to-X

Bo3 standard, Bo5 in finals. Character select is part of the match.

Watch for

Patch tiers

Tier lists shift quickly. The weekly tier note is the desk's lingua franca.

Editorial ask

Neutral game

Space control, footsies and the dash mechanic are the small details that win.

Track 04

Racing
Real-time sim - pace, tyre, traffic

Format

Sprint / feature

Qualifying sets the grid. Pit window is the strategic turn.

Watch for

Compound choice

Tyre sequence and undercut windows are the strategy story.

Editorial ask

Pace delta

Sectors and stint pace tell the race before the finish line does.

Track 05

Battle royale
Squad-based - rotation, zone, end-game

Format

Multi-game finals

Points accumulate across games. Survival and placement point at once.

Watch for

Zone prediction

Early rotation and edge play are the high-skill reads.

Editorial ask

Squad role split

IGL, fragger, support. The composition is the strategy.

03 / tournaments

Announced horizon
Sourced calendar

Sourced tournament horizon

Preview reasoning
Confirmed vs editorial

A match preview board that separates fact from reading

The left column accepts only what is sourced and dated. The right column is where the editorial reading lives - the scenario, the watch-for, the question the match will answer. We never let scenarios stand beside facts without labels.

Team dossiers, written from the outside in

Covering an organisation means writing to the source you hold. Where rosters are publicly confirmed we record the date; where the last sighting is older than two seasons, we leave the slot open and say so. The corridor below is a working sample: one active organisation, two framed identity cards.

06 / players

Role gallery
By position

A gallery of roles, not a leaderboard

Players are organised by what they do inside a match, not by stat lines. The role card names the specialty, the source date and the region; it does not list invented streaks or fabricated placement.

Duelist · FPS

Entry / opening frag

Region: EU · Last verified 2026-07-21

Carries the first contact. Reads the setup, takes the opening trade, resets tempo. Brief sentences are the desk's reading; the role is the source.

IGL · MOBA

Shotcaller and draft

Region: APAC · Last verified 2026-07-23

Reads the draft, calls the macro, paces the map. The role card describes the function; the desk does not name a specific player without a dated source.

Support · BR

End-game support

Region: NA · Last verified 2026-07-18

Rotates the squad, holds the high ground, trades the opening. The role is the editorial unit. The image is illustrative of the role, not a portrait of a named player.

Specialist · FPS

Anchor / late-round

Region: NA · Last verified 2026-07-20

Holds the late-round angle, scales the trade, controls the retake. The role card reads the function, not the player.

Flex · MOBA

Carry / scaling

Region: APAC · Last verified 2026-07-22

Closes the late-game, holds the tempo, finishes the team-fight. The role is the editorial; the player name waits for a dated source.

Driver · Racing

Pace / stint

Region: EU · Last verified 2026-07-17

Sets the qualifying lap, reads the tyre window, paces the stint. The role card holds the function, the editorial reading follows.

07 / patches

Patch workshop
Change + interpretation

Patch changes, paired with the editorial reading

Patch notes are facts. Interpretation is editorial. The workshop pairs each change with its reading, clearly labelled, so the reader can verify one and judge the other.

Change · tactical FPS · 2026-07-28

Utility cooldown increased 8s on two utility types

The patch note is the source. The change touches the round-three economy window and the late-round retake.

Editorial reading · play12 desk

The retake gets more expensive

Expect teams to bank utility into the opener, save post-plant utility for the late round, and lean on trade-heavy default setups. The reading is a working hypothesis; the desk invites correction.

Change · MOBA · 2026-07-28

Jungle camp value increased 8% across two camps

The change shifts tempo in the second clear. Reading the macro before the patch is the editorial ask.

Editorial reading · play12 desk

Second-clear tempo goes up

Look for more second-clear ganks around the minute-eight window. The mid-laner gets a smaller share of the gold curve; the sidelaner gets a wider window.

Change · fighting · 2026-07-28

Two neutral moves adjusted, one frame advantage shifted

The patch shifts the footsies tool on two characters. The tier list will move; the desk warns against pinning draft reads to the prior tier.

Editorial reading · play12 desk

Tier list likely to shuffle

Wait for the first weekly tier note before pinning draft reads. The desk will publish the first updated note as soon as it can be sourced.

A ledger of offline tactical diagrams

Live tactical diagrams age fast. The ledger keeps the slower, evergreen reads: a lane rotation, a site callout, a draft board, a meta chart. Each plate is a paper-and-pencil reference, not a live overlay.

10 / film room

Post-match film
Drafts · turning points

A working film room, not a live scoreboard

The film room reads what happened in a completed match - the draft, the turning point, the trade window - and leaves the live tick to partner desks. Each row is a dated editorial reading attached to a public broadcast replay.

Round 1
14:02

The opener trade held the round

The first contact was the round: utility banked, retake tools saved, the trade window closed clean. The replay shows the trade at the back-site angle.

Source: official replay · 2026-07-30
Round 7
23:40

The economy flip changed the macro

The anti-eco buy was the right read. The other side reset tempo. The next two rounds traded around the planted-default setup; the macro story broke out of the lane.

Source: official replay · 2026-07-30
Round 11
31:08

The retake traded down, not up

The retake lost the trade window. The post-plant stack had the angle, but the supporting utility was on cooldown. The round is a small lesson in retake timing.

15 / questions

Reader questions
Plain answers

Reader questions, answered plainly

Six questions the desk has been asked most often. The answers are short, sourced and dated. If a question is missing, the desk accepts corrections and additions through the contact page.

What does play12 actually cover?

play12 covers competitive esports across five tracks: tactical FPS, MOBA, fighting games, racing sims and battle royale. The coverage includes tournament horizons, team dossiers, player role guides, patch interpretation and official viewing rails.

Why are there no live scores or running brackets?

Live data ages within seconds and is the licensed broadcast partner's job, not the play12 desk's. The desk lists what is announced and dated, and labels what is not. Live tickers work against the editorial rule of source-on-every-claim.

How do you decide what to publish?

The news desk reads the official operator channels first, then the licensed broadcast partners, then the team channels. Anything that is not on a tier-one or tier-two source is labelled as awaiting verification and held until the source lands.

Where does the play12 route link to?

The play12 route is a first-party link to the play12 destination. The link is disclosed inside the editorial section that earns it, and it carries a sponsored rel. The route is not embedded in third-party iframes and is not placed in any primary navigation slot.

How are corrections handled?

When a report is updated, the original draft is left visible and the correction is appended with a date. The desk never silently rewrites a claim. The corrections page lists every change since the desk's first report.

Why is the page light and quiet?

An esports newsroom reads like a print broadsheet: it should be readable, not loud. The light surface and the quiet type keep the editorial reading in front of the design; the technical grid and the ribbon are the working structure.
